If you are unable to open or amend word/PDF documents via Proclaim and Word/Adobe seems to be working fine outside Proclaim, then this is usually caused by a stale session of Microsoft Word/Adobe. In order to fix this, try the following:
Right-click the task bar at the bottom of your screen (or press ctrl+alt+delete)
Select "task manager"
At the top, where the tabs are, select "details"
Locate on the list anything for "Winword.exe" or Acrobat.exe
Stop the task by clicking the button at the bottom right
This should fix the problem, and you should be able to open word/PDF documents
